It can work, I once worked with 8i on a Win3K server, 8.1.7.4.0, so far, so good. Just for the pourposes of the tests I performed. But as long as it is not supported, it can turn your installation into a mine field. This is Oracle's way of saying nothing on this CD can be installed on Windows NT (or Windows 2000)You can only install on a Windows 98 OS, not on NT (or equivalent). If you are trying to install the client, don't use the client disk, use the server disk and select the administrative client.

Windows XP is not supported by Oracle prior to 9i, so if you are installing 9.x it should be fine, IF it is Windows XP Professional, not XP Home. XP Home is not supported. I'm having the same issue with installing 8.1.7 on Dell Latitude P4.Run setup, but nothing happens. I copied the CD to the hard drive, looked for setup.ini and the symxxx.dlls, but there are no files of these names.

After rebooting I ran Typical installion of Oracle 8i again. First I got an error message 'Error in writing to file c:winntsystem32msvcrt.dll' which was 'ignored' and the installation continued. It went to about 60% (I read a product info 'Thank you for using Oracle' also)and closed itself without any information as to whether the installation was successful or not.When I checked the installed products, it said no products installed. I repeated the above procedure two time more.
Still the same result.1. What is the implication for the error message regarding msvcrt.dll?2. Because I am using WinNT 4.0 server with SP5, I have no problem with the 8i installation. We have installed MS Office97 in the PC. Should I remove this to install Oracle?How come then first time installation was successful? I also am using NT and have successfully installed Oracle8i. Have you tried to de-install all Oracle products cleanly and completely instead of manually wiping out the orant directory? After that is done, then try the install again.

I am getting the following error when I ren a vb.net application from windows server 2003. The application queries then inserts or updates a handfull of records.ERROR NA000 MicrosoftODBC driver for OracleOracleORA-04031: unable to allocate 4216 bytes of shared memory ('shared pool','unknown object','sga heap','library cache')What is so strange about this error is, I have this exact application running on an XP box, and I don't get the error. I wanted to move the app from the XP box to windows server 2003. When I did, I got this error. The app uses an odbc connection. I had to install oracle 8i and use the net8 configuration assistant. I did that, and all seems to be ok.
