Support for the roles and features that can be managed in Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2003 is limited.
Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 SP1 comes with “support for remote management of computers that are running either the Server Core or full installation options of Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1, Windows Server 2008 R2, and for some roles and features, Windows Server 2008,” Microsoft explained.
“Some roles and features on Windows Server 2003 can be managed remotely by using Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 with SP1, although the Server Core installation option is not available with the Windows Server 2003 operating system.”
Not all Windows 7 SP1 customers will be able to leverage the Remote Server Administration Tools.
According to Microsoft, the management solution is designed to play nice only with the Enterprise, Professional, and Ultimate SKUs of Windows 7 with SP1.

Prerequisites for installing Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT)
You will require a Windows Server 2019 computer with the “Graphical Management Tools and Infrastructure” installed to install the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) using the Server Manager graphical user interface.
Instructions for installing Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT)
To install the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) on Windows Server 2019 please follow these instructions. If some of the Roles or Features are already installed you may not have to perform all the steps listed below.
- On the Windows Server 2019 open Server Manager. If Server Manager does not start by default press the “Windows + R” keys, Type “servermanager” in the “Open” field and press “Enter” or click the OK button.
- On the Server Manager main windows Click “Add roles and features”.
- In the “Add Roles and Features Wizard” under “Installation Type” check the “Role-based or feature-based installation” radio button and click “Next”
- In the “Add Roles and Features Wizard” under “Server Selection” check the “Select a server from the server pool” radio button, select the server you want to install the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) on and click “Next”
- In the “Add Roles and Features Wizard” under “Server Roles” click “Next”
- In the “Add Roles and Features Wizard” under “Features” scroll down and check the “Remote Server Administration Tools” check box. Click “Next”.
- Some required supporting features such as the Web Server IIS role may be required. If prompted click “Add Features”.
- If prompted click next on the Web Server Role (IIS) page.
- If the Web Server Role Services page displays, accept the defaults and click “Next”
- In the “Add Roles and Features Wizard” at the “Confirmation” page click “Install” to begin the installation of the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT)
- The installation of the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) will begin and the progress will be displayed. This installation should not require a restart of the server.
- When the installation of the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) is complete you can find the RSAT tools under the “Tools” menu in “Server Manager”.
